An argument that broke out aboard a Metrobus in the District of Columbia led to a shooting Thursday that injured five people.

“There was some sort of argument or dispute on the bus. … The individuals that were involved in the argument then engaged in some sort of fight that came off the bus onto the sidewalk. We know at that time that gunshots rang out into the area,” interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeff Carroll said about the incident, which happened in the 5900 block of 16th Street Northwest at about 5:40 p.m.

Two minors and three adults were struck by the gunfire, then went to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Chief Carroll said.

He added that one person is being sought for opening fire and fleeing the scene.

Specifically, the victims were a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman, and a third adult whose gender was not specified and who is between 50 and 60 years old, according to Maryland’s WDVM-TV.

Chief Carroll said police don’t believe all of the victims were involved in what led to the shooting, and some were just bystanders.

The Metropolitan Police Department asks that anyone with information call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
