The opposition to the U.S. controlling a defensive military presence in Greenland, which includes bipartisan U.S. senators and leaders of Denmark and Greenland, has missed the most important issue (“Top EU official questions Trump’s trustworthiness over Greenland tariff threat,” Web, Jan. 20).

The main reason President Trump is concerned about U.S. military-controlled bases in Greenland is that if the U.S. cannot defend itself and becomes vulnerable, it will not be able to defend European or any other countries, and the world’s democracies will be at risk. That the discussion did not start with giving the U.S. an accommodation to have and control bases in Greenland and gain access to and participate in extraction and use of critical minerals defense was a major mistake.

Democrats don’t care, but NATO, Denmark and Greenland need to look at the issue objectively. Russia and China want control, and we know that’s what Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was about.
