Multi-franchise actress Zoe Saldana is now the top-grossing movie star worldwide of all time, passing Scarlett Johansson.
“I just want to express my sincerest gratitude for the extraordinary journey that has led me to become the highest grossing film actor of all time today. An achievement made possible entirely by the incredible franchises and the collaborators that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of,” Ms. Saldana said on social media Tuesday.
The movies Ms. Saldana has appeared in have grossed over $15.47 billion worldwide, besting Ms. Johansson, whose movies have brought in just over $15.4 billion worldwide, according to movie industry data site The Numbers.
Ms. Saldana’s top movies, including the recent “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” are all franchise films.
She appears as the major protagonist Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar films, and also appeared as the supporting characters Gamora in Marvel movies from Disney and Lt. Uhura in Star Trek films released since 2009.
Ms. Johansson also appeared in Marvel movies as Black Widow; the two shared the screen in “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Her other high-grossing franchise movies include “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Sing” and “Sing 2.”
In terms of the U.S. domestic box office, Ms. Johansson is still in the lead, coming in second with over $5.67 billion grossed all-time behind fellow Marvel star Samuel L. Jackson in first with over $5.85 billion, according to The Numbers.
After Ms. Johansson, fellow Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. is third all-time in U.S. box office at over $5.47 billion, while Ms. Saldana is fourth at over $5.42 billion.
