Trae Young’s Wizards debut has been delayed indefinitely. The four-time All-Star will be sidelined through the All-Star Break as he recovers from MCL and quad injuries on his right leg, according to multiple reports published Wednesday.
The Wizards sent Corey Kispert and C.J. McCollum to the Atlanta Hawks in a trade for Young last week. Young, 27, has played just 10 games this season due to the lingering injuries.
Washington’s front office expressed optimism about Young’s fit with the young roster last week.
“It is a rare opportunity to acquire a player of Trae’s skill, accomplishments, and age,” Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said when the trade was finalized following a hectic week of rumors. “Trae plays an exciting brand of basketball and brings a level of confidence and competitiveness that has set him apart in this league.”
Young averaged 19.3 points per game with 8.9 assists in limited playing time this season. He has posted at least 10 assists per game in each of the last three seasons.
The Wizards, 10-28, have doubled their win total since Christmas. The franchise has the fourth-worst record in the NBA, and a strong finish could send Washington’s first-round pick this year to the Phoenix Suns due to a previous trade.
The Wizards’ pick is only protected if they grab a top eight selection in the NBA draft lottery.
