OPINION:
Democrats are playing with fire. Party bosses are using gullible adherents as fodder in a choreographed scheme to provoke a violent confrontation with the administration. They need blood on the streets to paint President Trump as a tyrant.
The longer this political game goes on, the more likely it is to spiral out of control. Minneapolis natives are already fed up. Delivery drivers and neighbors are stuck waiting until the feds disperse the malcontents who have been barricading roads to keep Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from doing their job.
Disruptive mischief has already cost the life of one liberal woman whom the left is trying to elevate to the status of George Floyd. Her “martyrdom” will be the excuse for yet more street thuggery, just like Floyd’s heart failure became a pretext for the mostly peaceful burning of major cities.
Leftists justify their shoddy behavior by reciting a version of events existing only in their imaginations. They invent a reality where masked ICE agents roam Minneapolis to round up innocent American citizens for sport. Democratic-run states forced these tactics on themselves with their refusal to respect federal immigration statutes.
“This is an extremely important point: you’re only seeing chaotic ICE raids in blue sanctuary cities where local officials are fighting against federal law enforcement. The chaos is created by ‘leaders’ who would rather promote rioting in their streets than follow the law,” Vice President J.D. Vance explained on X.
Because Minnesota is a sanctuary state, politicians don’t let local or state patrols pick up the phone when ICE calls. Prison guards aren’t allowed to transfer foreign inmates into federal custody, which would ensure illegal alien thieves, drunken drivers and rapists aren’t released into the community.
Sensible states, the majority, have no problem turning over such malefactors to ICE so they can be shipped home quietly and efficiently. Minneapolis could reduce the ICE presence within city limits overnight by communicating with Uncle Sam, but the mayor and City Council refuse to do so.
Innocent residents are now paying the price for the terrible choices they make at the ballot box. They get to hear crude protesters making a racket at all hours, blowing whistles and launching fireworks at the federal lawmen.
Knowing the president has their back, federal officers aren’t intimidated. They aren’t hesitating to arrest the surprised leftists who cross the line into belligerence. Pampered socialists have grown accustomed to police indulging their misbehavior, and they aren’t used to facing consequences for their conduct.
ICE enforcers recognize what happens if they relax for a moment. A lunatic with a sniper rifle fired on a Homeland Security Department vehicle in Dallas in September, hoping to murder the ICE agents inside. Instead, two immigrants who entered the country unlawfully were killed. The ammunition the perpetrator used was inscribed with the slogan “Anti-ICE,” leaving no doubt about the motivation for the cowardly deed.
It’s only a matter of time before the president calls out troops to quell the soy-fueled rebellion. Since Thomas Jefferson first invoked it, the Insurrection Act has been invoked to quash rioting and looting more than 30 times.
Mr. Trump knows exercising this power would hand the professional organizers of this insurgency what they desire. Unfortunately, there isn’t an obvious alternative that would restore law and order to this once-great metropolis.
Democrats are acting up because they didn’t get their way in 2024. This insurrection is the real attack on democracy, and it must be suppressed.
