The World War II Memorial on the National Mall is closed off as crews work to replace and modernize its light fixtures.
Workers aim to be finished by May 15, the National Park Service said.
The memorial will get a new lighting system for its fountain, while nonoperational lights for the pillars dedicated to each U.S. state and territory will be replaced as needed.
The National Park Service closed off the memorial starting Friday. The agency did not say how many lights at the memorial are not working or when the light fixtures started to fail.
In addition, electrical and mechanical upgrades will be made around the memorial to ensure safety. The NPS expects the light installation and other work to cost about $3.7 million.
