The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee features 50 writers and media members from across the country. But, after Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former coach Bill Belichick missed the cut, some former players are calling for a change.
Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss joined the chorus before the Super Bowl on Sunday.
“If you didn’t play it, if you didn’t coach it, you shouldn’t have a vote,” Moss said on ESPN’s pre-game show. “I don’t care who you are, and I don’t care how you feel about it.”
Belichick and Kraft were in their first year of eligibility. Hall of Fame voters have openly said they expect the duo to be enshrined next year.
But the fallout from this year’s snub is ongoing. Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders had already called for changes to the selection process. The selection committee should “ask the Hall of Famers” who should be enshrined, according to Sanders.
“I wouldn’t want the Grinch who stole Christmas voting on a beauty pageant,” Sanders said on the “This is Football” podcast, comparing media members to the Dr. Seuss character.
The Hall of Fame has not announced any plans to change its selection process amid the controversy.
Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald headlined this year’s Hall of Fame class, which also featured Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri. Roger Craig was the lone pick among seniors, coaches and contributors.
