Punk band Green Day didn’t make waves in a performance before the Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday afternoon. However, NBC censored the controversial band for a TV broadcast during a rendition of “American Idiot.”

Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong did not change the profanity in the original lyrics of the song. The NBC broadcast muted the expletive.

The left-leaning group had not previously strayed away from controversy, changing lyrics in the hit song to critique President Trump.

“I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” the band had sung in past performances.

Mr. Armstrong did not include the new lyric in a controversy-free performance at the site of the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The group had already courted controversy earlier in the weekend.

The punk band opened the Super Bowl festivities with an invite-only performance on Friday. There, the group called on ICE agents to quit their jobs.

“Because when this is over, and it will be over at some point in time,” Mr. Armstrong said. “Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, J.D. Vance, Donald Trump, they’re going to drop you like a bad [expletive removed] habit. Come on this side of the line.”

The lyricists also changed the lyrics in his song “Holiday” on Friday to reference “the representative from Epstein Island.”
