New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is meeting with President Trump in Washington Thursday after making an unannounced trip, according to multiple reports.
The mayor and several of his top advisers — including political strategist Morris Katz — flew in Thursday morning for the 1 p.m. sit-down.
The topic of discussion is expected to be housing projects, which could amount to a “historic investment,” an unnamed source told the New York Post. Housing was also on the agenda for their last meeting at the White House in November.
Mr. Mamdani did not put the meeting on his public schedule, but a mayoral spokesperson confirmed to The New York Times that it would take place.
Their first meeting ended in a cordial Oval Office press briefing — including an exchange when Mr. Trump defended the Big Apple mayor even after attacks on each other.
“I met with a man who’s a very rational person. I met with a man who wants to see — really wants to see — New York be great again,” the president, who’s a New York native, said. “I’ll be cheering for him.”
Mr. Trump heaped praise on Mr. Mamdani, suggesting that the two held things in common. They talked real estate, zoning codes and how to bring down electricity rates.
At the president’s State of the Union Tuesday night, he gave the Democratic socialist a shoutout.
“The new communist mayor of New York City, I think he’s a nice guy, actually,” he said. “I speak to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy.”
