President Trump recognized World War II veteran George “Buddy” Taggart and U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan during his State of the Union address.
Ruskan also received a “Legion of Merit for Extraordinary Heroism” award for rescuing 11-year-old Millie Cate McClymond and 164 others during a massive flood event in Central Texas last year.
In all, 27 Camp Mystic campers and counselors died in the flood.
Trump was slated to champion his immigration crackdowns, his slashing of the federal government, his push to preserve widespread tariffs that the Supreme Court just struck down and his ability to direct quick-hit military actions around the world, including in Iran and Venezuela.
His main objective was convincing increasingly wary Americans that the economy is stronger than many believe, and that they should vote for more of the same by backing Republicans during November’s midterm elections.
