Young and health-conscious adults are managing their consumption of alcohol by alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, multiple news outlets report.

It’s called “zebra striping,” likening the alternating pattern of black-and-white stripes of a zebra to the alternating pattern of alcoholic and alcohol-free drinks being consumed.

The drinking trend has come to the fore amid reports on the negative effects of alcohol consumption.

Alcohol industry experts say the trend reflects a broader cultural shift toward moderation and a desire to enjoy a night out without next-day aftereffects.

Amid this shift, Michelob Ultra Zero has become the best-selling and fastest-growing non-alcoholic beer on the market, overtaking Heineken 0.0 since the brand launched in 2025, news outlets report.
