Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, said a 6-year-old boy got hold of a gun inside his home and fatally shot himself by accident.

Authorities said an adult was in the home on the 10100 block of Maple Leaf Drive when the boy shot himself in the face at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.

First responders arrived to give the boy CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Shiera Goff said the shooting is being treated as accidental, and no foul play is suspected. She said investigators are trying to figure out how the child was able to get his hands on the firearm.

“There is really nothing that I can say that would, right now, that would bring comfort to anyone. I mean, this is a child,” Ms. Goff said. “This was an isolated incident. No one was targeted. This child unfortunately gained access to this firearm —  I really have no words.”

Police haven’t said who owned the gun or if it was legally owned.

Officials also haven’t said what relation the child had to the adult inside the house.

No charges or arrests have been made.
