Police said they arrested “a person with what appears to be a gun” on Tuesday near the west front of the U.S. Capitol building.

The Capitol Police are still investigating and said they will provide more information once it’s confirmed.

An alert that Capitol Police sent to congressional staff at 12:15 p.m. said they were responding to a potential security concern on the lower west terrace of the Capitol and directed the staff members to avoid the area.

Capitol Police sent an update to staff at 12:48 p.m. saying one person is in custody and “there does not appear to be any other suspects or ongoing threat.”

Maryland Avenue between First and Third Streets SW is closed while police investigate.

Most lawmakers, who have seen a rise in threats against them in recent years, are not at the Capitol this week because it’s a congressional recess.
