OPINION:
Virginia senators were among those who criticized the Senate’s recent approval of a bill that would require Washington to adopt certain tax cuts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (“Senate backs compelling D.C. to adopt no tax on tips, overtime in initial vote,” Web, Feb. 11). Do Virginia Democrats have no guardrails on hypocrisy?
How quickly and conveniently they forget that they went around the voters once they had both houses in Richmond and allowed the Democratic-controlled Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to impose a 4% meal tax.
After the meal tax was rejected by the voters of that county twice in a popular vote, its Board of Supervisors, nine of whose 10 members are Democrats, voted to impose it anyway.
Is there no better way to express the will of the people than having them provide an up-or-down vote on affordability issues, such as taxes? The only way to fix the affordability problem is through a constitutional amendment that requires a vote of the people on a new tax or an increase in taxes, or that allows the federal government to impose fiscal responsibility.
My guess is that every Democrat in Richmond would vote against an amendment requiring a vote by the people.
Oh well, Virginia, you get what you vote for. Enjoy the next four-plus years.
