A 71-year-old man died after being gored by a bull during the first night of the Carnaval del Toro festival in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain.

The horrific incident occurred at about 1 a.m. local time Saturday when Eustaquio Martin entered the bullring and was charged by a bull.

The bull’s horn pierced Mr. Martin’s upper rib cage, which partially destroyed his heart and damaged his lung, according to reports.

“He entered the infirmary in agony and died less than a minute later,” Dr. Enrique Crespo told the local outlet La Gaceta.

This is the first fatality at the festival in more than 40 years. The Spanish Civil Guard is investigating the circumstances of the death.

A vigil and moment of silence in honor of Mr. Martin was held in

Ciudad Rodrigo on Sunday.

“As you know from the media, sadly a countryman of ours, very dear, has died in the night. We send a hug to his family and friends and are with them in their grief,” Ciudad Rodrigo Mayor Marcos Iglesias Caridad wrote on social media.
