A garbage truck hit two women in the District on Friday, leaving one dead and the other critically injured. The driver is accused of leaving the scene.
The crash happened near Georgia Avenue NW, Upshur Street NW and Kansas Avenue NW, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, Ward 4 Democrat, said on social media. She said the Metropolitan Police Department informed her of the fatality.
One of the women riding an e-bike was pronounced dead at the scene, police told Washington’s WTTG.
The police told WTOP-FM that the other woman, who was also on an e-bike, was hospitalized in critical condition. The truck in question, they said, was a white-and-green vehicle labeled 244 and bearing the name WB Waste Solutions LLC.
Police later found the truck in Maryland and were able to interview the driver Friday night, according to WRC-TV, another D.C. station. The Metropolitan Police Department has not disclosed the driver’s identity or announced any charges resulting from the incident.
