Friends and family of the late actor James Van Der Beek have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help his family deal with medical costs incurred from his cancer treatment, multiple news outlets report.
Mr. Van Der Beek died Wednesday at age 48 after a long battle with colorectal cancer. The costs of his prolonged treatment has left his widow, Kimberly, and their six children “out of funds,” according to the fundraiser page.
The campaign surpassed $1 million in less than a day, as thousands of supporters have offered contributions. Actress Zoe Saldana has contributed a monthly $2,500 payment, Yahoo News reports.
Ms. Van Der Beek and fundraiser organizers say the donations will help cover the costs of living expenses, bills and the children’s education.
Mr. Van Der Beek starred in the 1990s TV teen drama “Dawson’s Creek” and the 1999 high school football movie “Varsity Blues.”
