The Seattle Public Schools system said student absences to attend the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday will be unexcused.
Though the school system said in a release that “moments like this bring our city together, spark pride across generations, and remind us of the power of shared experiences,” it is remaining open to maintain continuity and stability for students.
Some parents are letting their kids play hooky to watch the parade regardless of the school system’s directive.
“Missing one day of school for something you may not get to see for 20 years is well worthwhile. You get to spend your time with family and friends and be down there and have that enjoyment,” Charlie Combs, who has kids in the school system, told Seattle’s KING-TV.
The Seahawks, who defeated the New England Patriots in Sunday’s Super Bowl, will have their trophy celebration at 10 a.m. Pacific Time at Lumin Field. The celebration requires a ticket to enter.
The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. just blocks away from Lumen Field and will end close to the Space Needle. Seattle officials expect as many as a million people to show up along the parade route, according to a joint release from the team and city.
“This year’s Seahawks team brought all of Seattle together with the strongest, loudest and most united spirit I’ve ever seen. … I encourage everyone to come out and join the celebration — responsibly, together and with pride,” Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson said.
