A long-term study has found that a brain-training game can help people over 65 lower the risk of developing dementia for up to 20 years, multiple news outlets report.

The study was published Monday in the Alzheimer’s & Dementia journal as a large, long-term followup of the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) research.

The game is a computerized visual test that pushes the player to recognize two different images more quickly in specific sequences. The speed is adjusted by how well the individual plays the game.

About 3,000 participants aged 65 or older took part in the ACTIVE study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
