The Baltimore Orioles will take the field on opening day without one of their young stars. Second baseman Jackson Holliday has a broken hamate bone in his right hand and will miss the start of the season, Mike Elias, president of baseball operations, said Wednesday.

The 2022 No. 1 overall pick suffered the injury while taking batting practice last week in Florida.

“It’s a pretty common baseball injury for a long time, happens to hitters a lot. It’s nothing concerning long-term, but he’s going to miss some time,” Elias said. “Won’t be ready for opening day, and hopefully his return is measured in weeks after that.”

Elias said Holliday will have surgery to remove the broken bone on Thursday.

Baltimore’s rising star isn’t the only player cursing his hamate bone. All-Stars Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets and Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks could miss opening day after breaking the small, hook-shaped bone just below the pinky.

Holliday, the son of former National League All-Star Matt Holliday, was preparing to enter his third MLB season.

Jackson Holliday struggled to start his career in 2024, but the 22-year-old bounced back last season to hit 17 homers, drive in 55 runs and steal 17 bases.
