The longest-tenured Commander is sticking around. The franchise signed punter Tress Way, who first joined the organization in 2014, to a one-year contract extension on Tuesday.
Way was Washington’s lone Pro Bowler last season, the third time he received the honor in his career.
“I am just so grateful and so honored that I’m wanted by these guys,” Way said. “I told [coach] Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters], ‘I just have so much fun playing for you guys.’”
The Oklahoma product is Washington’s all-time leader in punt yardage, punts pinned inside the 20-yard line and net punting average. He ranks second in team history in total punts.
With another healthy season, Way could etch his name in the Commanders’ record books. If he plays all 17 games, he would rank third all-time in regular-season games played for Washington. Only Hall of Famer Darrell Green and linebacker Monte Coleman would have recorded more appearances in burgundy and gold.
Way couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.
“You get one career when you play in the NFL, and you don’t know how long it’s going to be,” Way said. “I’m the punter for the Washington Commanders. The relationships and the stories and the memories … this has gotten to be my experience, and the fans have made that so special.”
