Rockville police on Tuesday charged a 16-year-old boy with attempted murder after officials said he brought a gun to his high school and opened fire on another student.
The Rockville City Police Department said Kahlil White-Villatoro has been charged as an adult in Monday’s shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School that left the victim seriously wounded.
The injured student was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police described the victim’s condition as stable.
Officials said they recovered a Polymer80 9 mm handgun linked to the shooting.
The suspect faces charges of second-degree attempted murder, as well as felony assault and gun-related charges in the shooting.
Mr. White-Villatoro remains behind bars in Montgomery County as he awaits a bond hearing.
Police said they were called to Wootton High around 2:15 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a shooting.
Investigators said they found the wounded student first inside a hallway and apprehended the suspected shooter near the school a short time later.
Wootton High was placed on lockdown for several hours as police sorted out the crime scene. Students were eventually dismissed to reunite with their families just before 5 p.m.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ field office in Baltimore said it’s assisting with the investigation.
