President Trump has formally thrown his support behind John E. Sununu in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race, cementing the candidate’s frontrunner status in the GOP primary.

On Truth Social, he praised Mr. Sununu as an “America First patriot” and emphasized that Mr. Sununu “has my complete and total endorsement — he will not let you down.”

Mr. Sununu is seeking to regain the Senate seat he held from 2003 to 2009. His main Republican opponent is former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown. Mr. Sununu lost the seat in 2008 to Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who is now retiring.

The Cook Political Report currently gives Democrats a slight advantage in the race, with Rep. Chris Pappas seen as the leading Democratic candidate.

The Sununu family remains deeply rooted in New Hampshire politics: John E. Sununu’s father, John H. Sununu, served as governor and later as chief of staff to President George H.W. Bush, while his brother Chris Sununu recently completed eight years as governor.

The Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, applauded Mr. Trump’s endorsement, saying it effectively ends the primary.

According to SLF executive director Alex Latcham, “John Sununu is the clear choice to be New Hampshire’s next U.S. Senator, and President Trump’s critical endorsement has put an end to the primary.”
