Sen. Mark Warner said Monday that his adult daughter died from complications related to juvenile diabetes and other health issues.

He said his daughter Madison, 36, died after a “decades-long battle” with the disease.

“She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void,” Mr. Warner and his wife, Lisa Collis, said in a joint statement. “We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we deal with this profound loss.”

Juvenile diabetes, commonly known as Type 1 diabetes, is an autoimmune condition in which the body struggles to produce insulin.

People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes need regular insulin injections or supplements to maintain a normal lifestyle.

Madison was the eldest of the couple’s three daughters; Gillian, 35, and Eliza, 32, are the others.

Mr. Warner said a college visit with Madison in 2006 prompted him to not to seek his party’s presidential nomination in 2008.

The Virginia Democrat, who was first elected to the Senate in 2008, lives in Alexandria with his wife.
