President Trump on Monday had lunch delivered to the Oval Office’s doorstep to tout the no tax on tips provision in his signature immigration and tax cut law known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
Deliverer Sharon Simmons, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “DoorDash Grandma,” carried two bags of McDonald’s as she was greeted by Mr. Trump at the Portico just outside the Oval Office.
Ms. Simmons said she received an $11,000 tax refund this year because of the no tax on tips provision, which fulfilled a promise Mr. Trump made during the 2024 campaign.
“I saved over $11,000 by not having to claim [tips],” she told the president. “It was very surprising.”
Mr. Trump called the refund “incredible.”
“We called it the Great Big Beautiful Bill; we should call it the Great Big Beautiful Tax Cut Bill, because it saves a tremendous amount of money,” Mr. Trump said. “That’s overtime, that’s also on Social Security. It’s pretty amazing.”
Mr. Trump’s touting of the tax refund came two days before Tax Day, the annual April 15 deadline for Americans to file their tax returns with the IRS.
Recent polls have shown that Mr. Trump has struggled to sell the One Big Beautiful Bill to the public, with some polls showing as many as 64% of Americans viewing it unfavorably.
A KFF Health Tracking Poll found that 64% of adults view the bill unfavorably, while 35% have a favorable view of it. A poll by the Pew Research Center showed 46% disapprove and 32% approve.
Mr. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have traveled the country and held rallies to promote the bill.
Mr. Trump, at one point, asked Ms. Simmons if she voted for him.
“Uh, maybe,” she said, before Mr. Trump laughed and shook her hand.
“I heard you’re a great supporter, I appreciate it,” the president said.
