Is Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s job as secretary of health and human services on the line (“Dear Democrat senators: Congrats on reaching new level of stupidity,” Web, Sept. 5)? At the contentious Senate Finance Committee hearing last week, Democrats demanded that Mr. Kennedy resign. Several of his relatives have done the same.

Yet Mr. Kennedy continues to push back against accusations of recklessness, disregard for science and vaccine skepticism. He says the scientific community is highly politicized and adamantly defends his focus on the public interest, evidence-based science and political transparency.

The outcome of this hearing remains unclear at this point. Mr. Kennedy holds firm on all his positions.

Did anyone notice the familiar spewing of hatred from the mouth of Sen. Bernard Sanders when he spoke at the hearing? It was yet another opportunity for the senator to deliver rhetoric of deep emotional vitriol in an attempt to destroy anything or anyone nonliberal, and he wasn’t about to let it go to waste.

More of us should learn how to read between the lines of political rhetoric. Chances are we won’t like what we read.
