Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, and the rest of the NFL award winners will sport a special gold patch on their jerseys this season.

A shining NFL shield will adorn their jersey collars starting with the Philadelphia Eagles’ opener Thursday.

Beyond Daniels, the other NFL award winners — Buffalo Bills quarterback and MVP Josh Allen, Denver Broncos cornerback and Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II, Philadelphia running back and Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley and Los Angeles Rams pass rusher and Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse — will also sport the specialty patch.

It’ll be the second jersey marking to honor active league award winners. Recipients of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award have worn patches of the trophy on their chest since 2017.

The NFL’s new initiative mirrors similar efforts by the NBA and MLB to honor championship teams. The Nike swoosh logo was colored gold this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning World Series winners. The NBA has championship jersey tabs for Finals winners.

Barkley will be the first to wear the gold shield patch when the Eagles open the season on Thursday night against the visiting Dallas Cowboys.
