The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrested a teen boy recently for his alleged role in cyberattacks on casinos in the city in 2023.
Between August and October 2023, multiple Vegas casinos were the target of cyberattacks attributed to a group going by the names Scattered Spider, Octo Tempest, UNC3944 and Oktapus, the police said in a release Friday.
Casino operator Caesars Entertainment lost customer data, and MGM Resorts International saw its operations also disrupted by the attacks, according to USA Today.
A probe eventually turned up the suspect, a teenage male whom the police didn’t publicly identify. He turned himself in on Wednesday.
Las Vegas authorities charged him with three counts of obtaining and using the personal identifying information of other people to harm or impersonate them and one count each of extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion and unlawful acts regarding computers.
The Clark County District Attorney’s Office in Nevada is working to get the suspect’s case moved to its criminal division so he can be tried as an adult, police said.
