OPINION:
In a recent conversation with my dad, we discussed capitalism. My father comes from a firm belief that the economic law of capitalism is the greatest thing to ever happen to humanity. I work as a scientist testing the quality of vaccines. I made the claim that progress and innovation in society is made possible by science and engineering. He refuted this, saying capitalism is the cornerstone of innovation.
My point is this: There are four corners. Of course you need individuals with the capital to invest in new frontiers, but without scientists and engineers, would they not just be a bunch of rich people in a room staring at their money, talking about possibilities? And I would argue the fourth corner is ethics. Though I express how critical science is, it does not mean that I negate the importance of those with the means to bring us into the future.
Despite the fact that my opinions often clash with my father’s, one thing my dad impressed upon me as a child is a constant reminder to use your voice. “Republican or Democrat, it’s important to have an opinion.” This does not mean spewing your ideals without any evidence or research. It means if you come to me with something well thought-out, as long as you take care to be interested in the politics of the world around you, I will listen.
