Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will not play in Sunday’s home game against the Las Vegas Raiders, coach Dan Quinn announced Friday. Backup signal-caller Marcus Mariota will start.
Daniels was limited at practice on Friday as he continues to recover from a knee sprain. The 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year hasn’t participated in any practices ahead of the matchup against the Raiders.
“We’re not going to do this the fast way,” Quinn said Friday. “We’re going to do it the smart way.”
Quinn said earlier in the week that he’d need to see Daniels join teammates in at least one full practice before clearing him for the game.
“It’s important — timing, reps, the movements,” he said. “We’d have to get some reps, for sure.”
Mariota hasn’t started a game since 2022 but played significant snaps in two games last season in relief of Daniels.
The 31-year-old Heisman Trophy winner of 2014 completed 77% of his passes last year, throwing for 364 yards while tossing four touchdowns without any interceptions.
