Ovechkin missed 16 games last season with a broken leg. He still scored 44 goals — tied for third most in the NHL — as the Capitals earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Capitals open the preseason on Sunday at Boston. The regular season kicks off with a home game against the Bruins on Oct. 8.
