Wholesale chain Costco recalled its Kirkland Signature store-brand prosecco recently because the bottles can shatter suddenly.

Costco is specifically recalling bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene sold between April 25 and Aug. 26 at stores in 12 Midwestern states stretching from the Dakotas to Ohio.

“There is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use,” Costco said in a recall letter to its members.

Costco said that people who bought the affected wine bottles should wrap the bottles in paper towels and put them in a plastic bag in order to avoid the risk of broken glass before then throwing the bags containing the bottles away.

Customers who bring the recall letter to a Costco location are entitled to a full refund of the purchase price for the prosecco.

The chain did not say whether the prosecco itself, a sparkling white Italian wine, was related to the threat from the bottles or was for any reason dangerous to drink.

The 12 affected states are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
