OPINION:
The foundation of a properly functioning society is respect for law and order. When the laws of the jungle (might makes right) supersede, chaos reigns and everyone suffers (“Trump wants death penalty for ex-con charged in fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee,” Web, Sept. 10).
So many Democratic-run cities are struggling because of out-of-control violence, which has been encouraged by lax and criminally permissive judges who refuse to mete out justice, thus offering no deterrent to breaking the law.
When law-abiding citizens are afraid to venture out into their communities and local businesses close down because of theft and murder, this is not America. This is life in a Third World banana republic that is tyrannized by fear. President Trump is right to seek to restore law and order in areas where it is desperately needed.
Where state and city officials do next to nothing to curb violence and allow mentally disturbed, repeat felons such as Decarlos Brown Jr. to roam the streets freely as wild predators, it is necessary for the federal government to step in to protect residents. All Americans have the right to feel safe, regardless of where they live.
