A public relations associate with the Carolina Panthers was fired over an Instagram post that mocked the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
The team’s football communications coordinator, Charlie Rock, shared a video of Mr. Kirk on his private Instagram account, saying in the caption, “Why are yall sad? Your man said it was worth it.”
The post included a screenshot of the Wu-Tang Clan song “Protect Ya Neck.”
The Panthers subsequently fired Rock, according to multiple reports published Thursday.
“The views expressed by our employees are their own and do not represent those of the Carolina Panthers,” the team wrote in a statement posted to social media. “We do not condone violence of any kind. We are taking this matter very seriously and have accordingly addressed it with the individual.”
