The writer of “Trump’s U.S. Open visit sparks boos and long security lines” (Web, Sept. 7) might report that anyone watching the U.S. Open on TV last weekend would have been hard-pressed to pick out any boos when President Trump made his appearance at Arthur Ashe Stadium. That’s how loud the applause and cheers were.

As far as the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is concerned, appropriate responses are singing along or respectful silence culminating in applause. Booing during the playing of the national anthem is not acceptable under any circumstances.
