Our national debt continues to climb, but the importance of this fact is discounted by most, if not all, politicians and the major media outlets on both sides of the aisle. Thus, it’s also ignored by most Americans.

Letters to congressional personnel on the subject are ignored. I suggested to Republican members of Congress that if they provided a viable mechanism to reduce or even eliminate the debt, their party could retain the presidency for many years. I got no response.

Rather than creating potential solutions, policymakers and the media engage in polarization and other distractions. Citizens then dutifully ignore the potential consequences of the expanding debt and do not cause problems.

We can kick the debt can down the road for only so long. Eventually, it explodes.

Why do we not care about our children’s and our grandchildren’s futures?
