Last month, an illegal immigrant truck driver who should have never had a driver’s license in the first place was involved in a California crash that killed three people and wounded four others (“Deadly semitrailer crash in California renews federal criticism of immigrant truck drivers,” Web, Oct. 24).

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy accused California of violating federal law by issuing a commercial driver’s license to this asylum-seeker, who is thought to have been under the influence of drugs when the semitruck he was driving slammed into multiple vehicles on a Southern California freeway on Oct. 21.

California was supposed to halt noncompliant licenses and revoke improperly issued credentials, per a Department of Transportation order, but federal regulators have uncovered flaws in the way California issues certain commercial licenses. One has to wonder whether, if a driver is an illegal alien is and thus driving in the U.S. illegally, they will keep up their mandatory vehicle insurance coverage once they have received a commercial driver’s license.

Additionally, if these truckers can’t speak any English or can speak only in broken English, can we even expect them to be able to read road signs in English? The answer is no!
