OPINION:
Two things appear abundantly clear among rank-and-file Democrats who work for the federal government. First, they vote for a candidate simply because he or she has a D next to their name, and second, they hate President Trump so much that they will vote D even when it is clearly against their own interests.
The American Federation of Government Employees union, which represents more than 800,000 federal employees, has urged Senate Democrats to immediately vote to pass a clean continuing resolution. The AFGE did not urge Republican senators in that fashion because it knows Republicans have consistently voted to open the government and that it is the Democrats in the Senate who have voted to keep it closed.
Federal government Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey who have not yet voted in their states’ upcoming elections can show their contempt for Senate Democrats who refuse to vote to open the government by voting for statewide Republican candidates. It’s a rare chance for them to express in clear terms to the so-called leaders of the Democratic Party how angry they are that it is the Democrats — not the Republicans or President Trump — who have closed the federal government, and they’re doing it purely for political gain.
