President Trump slammed Democratic gubernatorial nominees Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia over their stances on energy and boys in girls’ sports.
“Why would anyone vote for New Jersey and Virginia Gubernatorial Candidates, Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger, when they want transgender for everybody, men playing in women’s sports, High Crime, and the most expensive Energy prices almost anywhere in the World?” Mr. Trump said on social media.
In all caps, he urged voters in those states to “vote Republican” to get “massive Energy Cost reductions, large-scale Tax Cuts, and basic Common Sense!”
Under his leadership, he said, “Gasoline will come down to approximately $2 a Gallon, very soon! With the Democrats, you’ll be paying $4, $5, and $6 a Gallon, and your Electric and other Energy costs will, likewise, SOAR.”
“Vote republican for a great and very affordable life,” Mr. Trump said. “All you’ll get from voting Democrat is unrelentingly High Crime, Energy prices through the roof, men playing in women’s sports and heartache!”
Mr. Trump has put his support behind Republican gubernatorial nominees Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey and Winsome Earle-Sears in Virginia. He also endorsed Jason Miyares, the Republican candidate for attorney general in Virginia.
Although he is not on the ballot, Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey are making opposition to Mr. Trump a focus of their campaigns, including blaming him for the federal government shutdown.
Ms. Sherrill has used Mr. Trump’s attacks against her to fundraise. A Sherrill campaign email sent to voters on Monday said: “Trump has publicly endorsed my opponent (after Jack shamelessly begged for his support). He’s attacked me by name in multiple, unhinged rants on social media. His administration illegally leaked my private records to Jack’s campaign ally.”
The gubernatorial races have tightened in recent weeks, though the Democrats still have the advantage. Ms. Sherrill has a 4-point lead and Ms. Spanberger has a 7-point lead in the latest RealClearPolitics polling averages.
The polling average also shows Mr. Miyares ahead of embattled Democrat Jay Jones by 2.4 points in Virginia’s attorney general race.
