The FBI has released new video footage of a suspect in the placement of two pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican national headquarters on Jan. 5, 2021.
The video, released Tuesday, includes higher-quality footage that depicts more of the suspect’s movements while walking around the District with the bombs on that night.
The FBI said the suspect stood 5-foot-7, carried the bombs in a backpack and wore a gray hoodie, black gloves and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes during the alleged bomb planting. Fewer than 25,000 pairs of the shoes were sold between 2018 and the 2021 incident, the investigative agency said.
The FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department are offering a $500,000 reward for information that helps identify the suspect.
Authorities found the bombs on Jan. 6, 2021. Neither pipe bomb exploded, but both were viable and “could have seriously injured or killed innocent bystanders,” the FBI said in 2024.
About a half hour after the bombs were found, supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol to halt Congress’ certification of the 2020 election.
The FBI said it doesn’t know the suspect’s gender or whether there’s a connection to the Jan. 6 riot.
“Without being able to confirm the suspect’s identity, it is very hard to definitively establish motive. Therefore, it would be difficult for us to state that there is a link, although we can’t state there is not one,” David Sundberg, formerly the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s D.C. field office, told The Associated Press in January.
Mr. Trump pardoned 1,500 people charged with or convicted of crimes related to the Capitol riot soon after his return to office this year.
