After two years of ravaging war and global tension, a new era of peace may be on the horizon in the Middle East.Â
I’m Susan Ferrechio, Washington Times National Politics Correspondent.Â
This is my Q&A about the historic peace deal brokered by President Trump.Â
Who is involved in this peace deal and how did it unfold?
This peace deal is between Israel and Hamas. They have been at war with each other since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. There’s little doubt about the prominent role that Mr. Trump played in getting the Israeli hostages returned and the peace deal secured, and he was greeted with great fanfare when he arrived in the Jewish state early Monday. He received a standing ovation at the Israeli parliament, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave all the credit to Mr. Trump, whose election, he said, made the peace deal possible.Â
What exactly will the peace deal accomplish?
So far, the first phase of the peace deal has led to the release of all 20 living hostages that have been held by Hamas in captivity since the terrorist organization’s attack on Israel two years ago. They’ve also returned four bodies of the hostages who they murdered. The entirety of the deal involves much more and will require key Arab countries to be involved in ensuring an enduring peace in the region.Â
What else has Trump done on the global stage?
President Trump’s role as a world peacemaker has become a dominant part of his presidency. He’s helped settle conflicts between Israel and Iran, between Pakistan and India, and other nations. And he’s hosted White House meetings and signing ceremonies to usher through peace deals across the globe. Netanyahu said everything changed when Mr. Trump was elected, and he credited him as someone who could make peace deals quickly and decisively, more so than any president he’s ever worked with.Â
