Boris Johnson, the ex-British prime minister, said President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize for his Israel-Gaza deal.

Speaking to Saudi Arabian state TV channel Al Arabiya English on Wednesday, Mr. Johnson said the deal is “an astonishing piece of good news,” even though it is “a very unfashionable thing to say in London or in Europe or wherever in liberal circles” to give credit for the deal to Mr. Trump.

As part of the agreement, Israel ceased its bombing of the Gaza Strip, allowed the resumption of humanitarian aid into Gaza and released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners it had in custody in exchange for Hamas releasing 20 remaining living hostages taken in its Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and sending back the remains of dead hostages.

As for the Nobel Peace Prize, Mr. Johnson said Mr. Trump earned it because “he has applied the force of his personality and the power of his office to move mountains and to get this thing done. … He speaks from the heart, and it’s unmediated by calculation. He just said it, and he’s very effective.”

Mr. Johnson added that the feat that would lock in the medal or other “liberal prizes for peace” for Mr. Trump would be ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Mr. Trump was speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on Thursday ahead of Friday’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House to discuss providing Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles.
