The family of Diane Keaton confirmed Wednesday that the Oscar-winning 79-year-old actor died of pneumonia last week.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on [Saturday]”, her family told People magazine.

Ms. Keaton is best known for playing the titular role in Woody Allen’s 1977 film “Annie Hall,” which netted her the Academy Award for Best Actress; for playing Kay Adams in “The Godfather” and its two sequels; and for her role in 1996’s “The First Wives Club.”

Ms. Keaton’s family told People that the actress was passionate about helping animals and the homeless, so “donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
