Edge rusher Drake Jackson looked healthy enough for the Washington Commanders to sign him on Wednesday. His injured knee isn’t ready for play, causing the franchise to place him on injured reserve on Thursday.
Jackson, a former second-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in 2023 that caused him to miss the entirety of last season. He will be eligible to return from injured reserve after missing four weeks.
His status opened up a spot on Washington’s 53-man active roster. The Commanders could use that opening to activate guard Sam Cosmi, who has been sidelined since tearing his ACL during last season’s playoff game against the Detroit Lions.
The Commanders opened Cosmi’s 21-day practice window earlier this month. Coach Dan Quinn will have to add Cosmi to the active roster before next week or relegate him back to injured reserve. But after working as a full participant in the last two weeks of practice, Cosmi is widely expected to make his season debut on Sunday.
“It was a hell of a start for him to get back and get rolling. He’s really put the work in,” Quinn said of Cosmi. “So, anticipating seeing that continue and the trajectory going up.”
The 3-3 Commanders travel to Dallas this weekend to face the 2-3-1 Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday.
