Saturday’s basketball exhibition between Georgetown and George Washington universities will air live on Monumental Sports Network, the streaming service announced Wednesday. It will be the first game between the two D.C. teams since 1981.

Tipoff is 6 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center, home of GW.

The exhibition was originally announced in June. It wasn’t clear whether the game would air on local TV until this week.

“This is a special moment for college basketball in the District, and we’re thrilled to bring it to fans on Monumental Sports Network,” said Friday Abernethy, the network’s general manager. “It’s not only a renewal of an exciting D.C.-based matchup, but also an opportunity to provide a robust local platform for these programs and showcase the incredible passion for college basketball in our city.”

Monumental Sports Network aired 10 George Washington games last season but has not broadcast a Georgetown game since it transitioned from being an NBC affiliate in 2022.

The two squads played each other at least once per year from 1945 through 1981. The Hoyas lead the series 53-38, with an ongoing five-game winning streak against GW’s Revolutionaries.

Both universities have fallen from their hoop peaks in the 1980s and 1990s. The Hoyas haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2021 and haven’t won a tourney game since 2015. They won it all in 1984.

The Revolutionaries haven’t gone dancing since 2014. George Washington is projected to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10, based on the conference’s preseason poll.

Georgetown was named as the ninth-best team in the Big East in that conference’s coaches survey.
