President Trump said India has agreed to stop buying oil from Russia, a move he had heavily criticized as keeping alive the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Mr. Trump said he spoke Wednesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who assured him there will be no more oil purchased from Russia.
“He’s not buying his oil from Russians,” Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office. “He can’t do it immediately. It’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon.”
He said that “we all want President Putin to stop this” war against Ukraine.
He said if India stops buying oil from Russia “it makes it much easier” to get Russia to agree to negotiations.
The president has railed against the countries that continue to buy oil from Russia, which also included China and some European countries.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Mr. Trump said during his U.N. General Assembly speech last month. “But inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products … I found out about two weeks ago, and I wasn’t happy.”
