OPINION:
President Trump is guilty of being the worst “literal Hitler” ever. Democrats desperate to slander the 45th and 47th president as history’s second-greatest threat to humanity found themselves in a bind Monday as Hamas freed the last Israeli captives in its grasp, making way for the ceasefire.
“It’s going to hold up,” Mr. Trump declared.
On short notice, the world’s leaders dropped what they were doing to fly to Egypt and celebrate this feat of diplomacy. Mr. Trump’s predecessor, Joseph R. Biden, tried but couldn’t pull it off. The United Nations failed. Greta Thunberg’s social media yacht parade inspired no one to lay down their rifles and rockets.
Egypt, Turkey and Qatar joined Mr. Trump in signing an implementation framework at the Sharm el-Sheikh peace summit. The heads of state and prime ministers from dozens of other nations served as witnesses to the historic pact.
Humanitarian aid will flow to the Gaza Strip, and the war-torn area will be allowed to rebuild. Security guarantees will ensure neither side thinks about reigniting the enmity, which means the battle that began with the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, sneak attack on Israel is over.
“After so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today the skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a holy land that is finally at peace. A land and a region that will live, God willing, in peace for all eternity,” Mr. Trump said.
The president also traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with the hostage families to share their grief and joy. Omer Shem Tov, who was released in February, told CNN earlier this year that his captors had been watching the 2024 U.S. presidential contest closely, and they knew what would happen if the Republican candidate won.
“As soon as Donald Trump was elected, they understood he wants to bring us back home,” he explained. “Immediately, the way they treated me changed. … More food, they treated me better.”
In a refreshing change of pace, a few Democratic chieftains briefly set aside partisan differences to recognize the success. Hillary Clinton saw that the pieces were in place Friday. She commended Mr. Trump on CBS News for “seeing a path forward for what’s often called ‘the day after.’” The president responded by bringing up the former secretary of state in his remarks in Israel on Monday.
He reminded the audience that Mrs. Clinton once insisted that he would start fights with everyone. “No. My personality actually is all about stopping wars, and it seems to work,” he said.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer was also pleased with the latest news. “I commend the enormous advocacy of the tireless hostage families, President Trump, his administration, and all who helped make this moment happen,” he said in a statement.
Once Mr. Trump ends the pointless, stalemate war in Ukraine, the luminaries who not so long ago decided Barack Obama was worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize are going to have a hard time justifying their snubbing of this century’s greatest peacemaker.
Mr. Trump was never a secretary of state, nor was he the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He’s not even a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. The man Democrats did their best to lock up in prison on multiple felony charges has secured a peace that the “experts” couldn’t achieve.
Perhaps that says more about the foreign policy establishment than Mr. Trump.
