OPINION:
Washington Times Commentary Editor Kelly Sadler wonders who will carry the Republican banner in 2029 after President Trump’s departure from the White House (“What does the Republican Party look like without Trump?” Web, Nov. 17).
With all deference to Ms. Sadler, the Republican Party does not need another Donald Trump, the shaker and maker of MAGA, in 2029.
As with any effective, new business organization, the U.S. will need someone who can help America internalize MAGA with its proud goals and short but very effective history. It needs someone who can strengthen efforts to support, defend and guard the lives and goals of all American citizens.
Having someone President Trump endorses will also be a major requirement to keeping the base and drawing back to the Republican family those who may have not been a great fan of Mr. Trump’s methods.
For this seemingly impossible task, there are many — including me — who think former CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would be the right person to take up the MAGA banner. (Mr. Pompeo was also first in his graduating class at West Point, not an easy accomplishment.)
Mr. Pompeo is well-known for his staunch support of Mr. Trump, but that support wasn’t unconditional. He gave it with his eyes wide open to various areas that needed refining and attention.
Mr. Pompeo would be a very strong leader to follow in President Trump’s footsteps and take the U.S. onward and upward on the path our current commander in chief is laying out.
