Officials said New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was rushed to a hospital in critical condition early Sunday after shots rang out near a midtown Manhattan restaurant.

The New York Police Department said Boyd, 29, was shot twice around 2 a.m. following a confrontation with a suspect.

Authorities said Boyd had at least one gunshot wound to his abdomen. The bullet became lodged in the NFL player’s lung, a law enforcement source told NBC News.

“We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” said a spokesperson for the New York Jets.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting. Police said no arrests have been made so far.

Boyd played his college football at the University of Texas before he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

After four seasons up north, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023. He was released later that same year and spent the next two seasons on the Houston Texans’ practice squad.

Boyd joined the Jets this spring on a one-year deal, but has not played this season after he was injured over the summer.

Teammates asked for prayers for Boyd in social media posts on Sunday afternoon.

“Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety,” linebacker Jermaine Johnson said in a post.

“Lord, place your mighty hand on him as he fights lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord,” defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said in a post. “Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him.”

The Jets did not have a game on Sunday following their 27-14 loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
