OPINION:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Senate Republicans opposed ending the filibuster and in recent weeks cited the same excuse I have heard in the past: When the Democrats have control of Congress, they can pass anything they want. But under Presidents Clinton, Obama and Biden, Democratic Senate leaders didn’t end the filibuster. The Senate Republicans’ excuse has just been shattered.
Mr. Thune’s refusal to end the filibuster relies on politics just like the actions of Minority Leader Sen. Charles E. Schumer, and it’s unacceptable to us MAGA voters. Mr. Thune should resign or face a vote by his colleagues for removal from his leadership position.
The first thing the new Senate majority leader should do is hold a vote to change the filibuster to majority rule. Once it passes, the new leader should move on to the No Rogue Rulings Act, which would prevent federal judges from exceeding their authority. Had this all happened in recent weeks, the shutdown would have been over sooner.
Senate Republicans, if you don’t want the Democrats to take control of Congress, then pass bills the American people have been demanding from congressional Republicans for decades. Codify all of President Trump’s legal executive orders so they become federal law and cannot be overruled by a future president’s executive order, which is against Article II of the Constitution.
Term limits, the end of insider trading and parental protection act to prevent overreach by officials who believe the raising of children is government’s responsibility. It will mean the end of the double standard that exists between the American people and state public officials who violate federal law.
I have more such ideas to help make America great forever. The question is: Is anyone paying attention?
